Amy the Seamstress

I will be writing more in this post later, so bear with the brevity of today’s post. Amy has developed a passion for designing and sewing her own clothes. She began, last year, by designing doll clothes that looked like famous people’s ball gowns. Here is the mini mannequin she used.

the little mannequin has some holes from where Amy accidentally cut it while working.

Amy liked the doll dresses so much, she decided to make her own clothes. I offered her patterns, but she said she could make the outfits without a pattern, and she succeeded! Here is a photo of Amy and Lindsey dressed as the animated movie characters, Princess Peach and Princess Daisy, from the popular movie, “Mario,” (which was based upon the video game.)

Amy designed and made both costumes

She has been asking for a dress maker’s dummy, since Lindsey, her twin, is over 4 inches taller, and sometimes she is not available to wear a partially made garment Amy is working on. For Christmas, Amy received her first dress maker’s dummy, and we found one reasonably priced at Walmart. Here is an affiliate link to that dummy:

OK, I promised updates. Amy already has an update. She went to a store (Urban Outfitters) and liked a skirt, but it cost $130. She took a photo, and with Rayon, Tule, and lace, she created her own version (slightly different from the original.) In the photo below you can see the new dress maker’s dummy wearing Amy’s skirt. But you will notice the dummy is wearing a red top and a black shirt under the red top. Amy told me having this dress maker’s dummy is helpful for putting outfits together. Now she does not need to dress herself and struggle to look in the mirror, but she can easily dress the dummy and look at it from all angles to see if she likes the outfit.

Amy is making this (so far unfinished) skirt and is putting together an outfit to go with it.

We will write more, soon, about any tips Amy wants to offer our readers about how Amy uses this new mannequin. For now, thanks for reading this post, and if you need a mannequin, consider Walmart. We had searched online for a long time, but every mannequin was very expensive or the shipping was as much as the mannequin. This is the first time we found one reasonably priced, and the shipping is free!
